I took a road trip up the West coast of America a few years back in a convertible Mustang. Once you get past the first hour or so where you pay particular attention to everything being on the other side of the road, you then settle down into the swing of it and it becomes relatively normal. I loved it!!

One word - Roundabouts!

They are hard enough in the UK let alone doing them the wrong way round! My brain cant process it. Thankfully, I'm always the passenger when driving in France, I dread to think what I'd do if I had to drive myself - possibly avoid all roads with roundabouts??

The only issue I have with driving on the 'other' side of the road when I take my car from the UK to continental Europe is that I have a massive blind spot in my passenger side mirror (the left side). It makes me realise how difficult a job foreign lorry drivers must have in my own country.

Interesting how so many commenters are talking about their own preferences for driving on whichever side of the road based on their own experiences.

Being British, my own experience is driving on the left of course but that hasnt caused me any problems when driving in countries where they drive on the right -UNTIL- I hit a roundabout.

'Normal' size roundabouts are fine but when you're on one of the huge inner city roundabout --- phew!

ps - I had a great time in Prague a couple of years ago and we did all of our travelling on their excellent underground system, including a trip to the play-off semi-finals of Sparta Prague's ice hockey team. Highly recommended and inexpensive evening out if you're ever over there.

I prefer driving on the left side of the road. It's kinda awkward using the right lane at first. And I'm actually getting used to it though. Great post you have here. Thanks for sharing this wonderful thought.

As someone else has stated above, the smaller towns on the outskirts of Prague are a must. They are relatively untouched by tourism so you can experience the real Czech Republic. I visited a number of friendly small towns when I was traveling round Europe last summer. I hope that you enjoy your experience over there.

I have lived in places with both ways. I don't know really which one I would prefer. Do you think there is a better one, or just what you are used to?

I was unaware that the Czechs used to drive on the left before 1939. I have often thought about how much of a problem it would be nowadays for any country (like the UK) to swap from driving on one side of road to the other. The expense would be huge... changing all of the road signs, motorway gantry signs etc. as well as the surge in road traffic accidents that it would be bound to cause. Because of this I can't see any of the major nations now changing which side of the road they drive on.

I'm also from the UK and I've never had a problem driving on the right hand side of the road - it's just like driving on the outside lane of a motorway. I actually find it easier driving a RHD than a LHD even when in Europe. I'm just not used to LHD's - when I try to change gear I end up opening the window.

I own a Westie dog and if we drive with the windows down he is usually harnessed to the lap belt in the back seat of the car. The harness is designed for dogs. I think that this will eventually become law in Canada.

I once saw a pick-up truck and in the open truck bed stood a dog. The truck was driving on the highway. I was appaled to see that a dog was loose in the back of the truck driving at high speed.
