Amazing place! the waters in the terraces are the sediments of the springs with calcium bicarbonate in 33C. Waters, containing mainly calcium salts and carbon-dioxide, run off the plateau’s by depositing calcium while carbon-dioxide disappearing. The marvelous landscape of Pamukkale has been created by this gradual formation, leaving a cotton-like image. Located above the theatre of Hierapolis, the mineral water sources from the thermal springs of Cal Mountain.

Thats a really nice photo! I live in the French Alps and see a lot of this kind of thing. One of my favorite things to do is walk down near the river in the weekend as there are always lots of nice ice formations to marvel at.

I fully agree with the decision of the Turkish government to demolish the hotels on top of Hierapolis. This will help preserve the area for future generations. I very much enjoy traveling Europe and will make a special note to visit this wonderful tourist spot in Pamukkale. Thanks for sharing Ricky.

These pictures are incredible. It sounds like you had a nice vacation with the opportunity to learn a lot as well.

I live in Florida and, while I enjoy the moderate winters, I haven't seen snow in many years.

Karen - Thank you so much for regularly visiting my blog & commenting. It is so nice to know that someone reads what I write! I'm glad you're enjoying the virtual journey.

Mike - I'm sure you did stay in the same hotel or in one of its neighbours. From memory, I think there were four or five of them. Like you, I had no real idea about the history of the place; certainly, I didn't realise that the hotels were sitting on top of parts of an ancient city. I only discovered all of this when I did a little internet research in advance of my October 2009 visit.

In many ways, the hoteliers of the 1970s & 1980s were doing very much the same as the ancient Greeks & Romans - commercially developing a natural phenomenon for visitors! However, siphoning off the hot spring water, together with escaping waste water from the hotels, was beginning to damage the very thing that visitors came to enjoy. Hence the somewhat drastic action of the Turkish authorities in the early 1990s, which is apparently when all the hilltop hotels were demolished.

What the authorities have done since, is build a couple of open air swimming pools at the bottom of the hillside, collecting some of the spring water after it has run down downhill and deposited some of its calcium carbonate. Of course, by the time the water has reached the bottom of the hillside, it is far cooler than it was at the top! Unfortunately, these pools had already been emptied and cleaned out for the winter when we were there, even though the day time temperature was still in the high twenties Celsius.

Ricky I guess I may have stayed at the same hotel back in the 80's, but before 1988. Like you I had no idea of the history of the place or indeed that it was built atop the ancient ruins until today when i read your article.

I can remember walking freely around the hillside too.
